Insurance Tips for Condominium Unit Owners
Scott Kakacek

Condominium unit owners have specialized insurance needs because they own their individual unit but not the entire building. Here’s what most condo insurance policies cover:

  • Some types of weather damage, including damage caused by hail, wind, or lightning
  • Losses caused by other events, like fire, theft, or vandalism
  • Accidental discharge of water from within a plumbing system
  • Artificial generation of electrical current

Here are a few events that can causes losses unlikely to be covered by condo insurance:

  • Flood, earthquakes, mudslides, contamination, or rodent infestation
  • Business or professional pursuits
  • Ownership, maintenance, or operation of aircraft, motor vehicles, or some watercrafts

Common areas of a condominium, like walls, roof, floors, and elevators, aren’t likely to be covered by a condo unit policy, but those areas should be covered by the condo building “master” policy. Contact one of our local independent insurance agents to build a policy that’s right for you.
